Let's debunk the various myths about blogging.
I first started my blog back in 2015, when I started traveling. It began as a way to update my friends and family back home with stories from abroad, those I always dreamed of being able to turn blogging into my full time job.
When I started my blog (and still today if I’m being honest), people constantly tell me that blogging isn’t a real job. They ask me things like, “But when are you going to really start working?”, “When will you go back to school?” and so on.
No matter how many times I tell people that I work online and blog, I’m not sure some of them will ever accept that as my ‘job’. They’ll always be waiting for me to do something more mundane with my life. That brings me to today’s post. I’ve noticed that there are quite a few myths out there about the blogging world.
In this post I’m going to be busting some of those myths about blogging for you.
Let’s get started.
5 Myths about Blogging, Debunked
Myth One about Blogging
No one reads blogs anymore.
It’s a common myth about blogging, especially with the rise in video content, that blogs are simply going out of style. I hear from people all the time that blogging is dead. Or that no one even reads blogs anymore…
I have even fallen for this myth from time to time. Often I’ll go long periods without blogging simply because I believe that blogging is dead or that no one is going to read my blogs. But guess what, each month more and more people are coming and reading my blog.
If you’re creating helpful or entertaining content, if you’re properly doing SEO research ahead of time, then yes, people are going to find and enjoy reading your blogs. Remember, it’s good to create many forms of content, so if you’d like you could also turn your blogs into YouTube videos. All that will do is help drive more viewers to you!
Myth Two about Blogging
You can’t make a real income blogging.
Woooooh this one gets spread around a lot… especially by family at Thanksgiving, am I right??
Luckily, that’s simply not true. There are plenty of examples of bloggers that make six figures a year and the one thing they will always tell you is that they endured. The way to succeed to stick with it. If you want to learn more about how you can monetize your blog, click here.
Myth three about Blogging
Blogging is easy.
Let me just throw this out there, there is nothing easy about blogging. Oftentimes I work more as a blogger than I worked before as a nursing assistant. It’s much harder to ‘turn off’ as well. I am constantly in battle with just answering one more email or writing for one hour longer. It’s so hard to say no to my screen.
It also is worth noting that it takes time to grow and be successful as a blogger. And that time means you are going to be putting in a lot of overtime hours. Trust me though, when you get to type a blog post or create a new video from anywhere in the world, it’s all worth it.
Myth Four about Blogging
You can start a blog for free.
This one I see all the time and alright maybe you can technically start a blog for free...
But let’s face it. Blogging is growing a business online. And that’s not cheap or free. You have to spend money to make money, people. A blog is something that you need to invest in.
While you might be able to scrape by on a shoestring, some of these things are just better to invest in upfront. You need to have a domain name, no more of this myblog.wordpress.com. You also need to have good hosting and a good website platform.
If you don’t have good hosting, your site simply won’t load quickly and people will leave. If you’re not on the right platform you’ll just end up spending more money in the future fixing things. And the last expense to keep in mind is your site design. A few years ago you could get away with a basic theme, but with the influx in blogs and sites online, it’s important that your site stands out. For a people without a coding background, that can mean hiring a designer and developer to help.
Now all of these expenses don’t have to happen right away, but keep in mind that they will happen and so what I suggest is that you start a small savings pot to prepare for them when they do come up.
Myth Five about Blogging
