Are you excited to learn more about the Jewish holiday called Purim and how you can join the festivities in 2020?
Starting this blog post was hard. It was one of those moments where you type something into the screen and then hit the backspace at least 30 times.
Purim is such an unique, emotional and personal experience for me that I found it hard to share. You might think I’m crazy, how can this huge party be emotional and personal? You just go and have fun. True, you show up and have a blast.
It’s emotional for me because a lot of my best friends are the people I met at Purim and it’s something I hope to be able to come back for time and time again. I won’t get into that, instead I’ve decided to use this space and this platform to teach you what Purim is, how you can prepare and even how you can come and join me here next year.
Let’s make Purim 2020 the best yet. Book your Purim adventure here.
What is Purim?
Purim is a Jewish holiday that is a huge mix between Halloween and Carnival. People come from all around the world, the entire country takes days off from reality and for about a week before the parties start, you begin to see people wandering the cities in elaborate and colorful costumes.
Purim is the celebration of the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia. It’s a holiday that brings everyone of this country, no matter their belief, background or religion together for a week of festivities. It’s one of the only occasions in this country that everyone is allowed to drink and make as much noise as they want, which of course results in some epic parties.
The first year I came to Israel it just happened to be in time for the Purim holiday. It was something I had never heard of but was eager to join. I threw a costume together and danced my heart out for a week straight. When I got invited to come back this year, it was something that I couldn’t pass up.
How to prepare for your first Purim in Israel
Preparing for your first Purim can be exciting. This is your chance to bring your dream childhood Halloween costume to life, in adult form. I’ve seen people dressed as Ice Cream Cones, Flowers and Watering Cans, Shrimps and more. The more creative you are, the better!

I recommend getting your craziest group of friends together and planning an epic group costume. If you’re friends are always looking for a perfect group holiday to take together, celebrating Purim in Israel is the perfect place to go.
If you don’t have friends that can go though, Purim is the perfect chance for you to take your first solo trip. There are so many people here ready to party and be your best friend. You won’t find yourself alone at all. Every year I have come to Purim by myself and ended up with some of my closest friends to date. We actually meet back at Purim every year now to keep the tradition alive.
Purim with Abraham Hostels
The best way to enjoy Purim is with Abraham hostels. Abraham great company that I have spent a lot of time with during my time here. They have put together a package specifically for Purim, making sure that you don’t miss a single bit of the party.
Abraham hostels throws two of the biggest parties in Purim history, one in Tel Aviv when Purim is just beginning and one in Jerusalem the following day. People come from all over the country to be there for the event, you’ll have the most amazing time dancing your heart out with them.
They always have someone around to do face paint and I’ve even seen them offer things to guests to wear from a stache of costumes that I assume gets left behind each year. At the Jerusalem party they always have pizza and at both events they have live music and lots of dancing. What I love about celebrating Purim with Abraham hostels is that they truly think of every detail AND when you are ready to go to bed, your room is right upstairs. There’s no stumbling around after a great night out trying to find your way home.
What does the package include?
- Accommodation for your stay with Abraham Hostels in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem
- A pub crawl your first night in Tel Aviv
- Graffiti tour of Tel Aviv
- Huge party at Tel Aviv Hostel
- Huge party at Jerusalem Hostel
- Street parties in Jerusalem. The front desk at the hostel will let you know the best places to go too but you can’t go wrong just heading downtown and hitting every street party
- End with a relaxing day going to Masada, Ein Gedi and the Dead Sea!
The best part about this entire package is that when Purim ends, you get to go hangout for the day at the dead sea, relaxing and washing away the craziness of the past few days. It’s the perfect way to reset and if you have more time in Israel, then I recommend afterwards spending the weekend in Nazareth.
What to bring to Purim 2020
- An EPIC costume!
- Lots of Glitter and face paint
- A Water Bottle that you can take to the streets with (hydration is key)
- A small bag or fanny pack comes in really handy (needs to hold your phone, keys, wallet)
- Sunscreen (I always forget and I get burnt everytime - plus you go to the dead sea the day after so sunscreen in general is a great idea)
- A great attitude (Purim is FUN. It’s unique and exciting so make sure you come ready to have the best time of your life)
I really hope that you’ll come join Purim next year, it’s truly going to be an amazing experience and celebrating with Abraham Hostels is the best way to do it.
