In this post, I’m going to be doing something a bit crazy… I’m going to be helping you find travel insurance for digital nomads. BUT, from a travel insurance company that doesn’t suck… Revolutionary I know. Because let’s face it… no one likes their travel insurance company. But what if you did?

For the past 5 years of my travels, I’ve been using SafetyWing for my travel insurance. And YES, I really use them. They’re different from your typical travel insurance company because their goal is to create travel insurance for people who travel full-time or in other words, travel insurance for digital nomads.

If you’ve ever tried to get travel insurance before as a digital nomad, you’ll already know that we don’t usually meet the requirements for typical travel insurance.

A return ticket? Never. A start and end date of our trip? Definitely not. A specific list of countries that we’re going to visit without straying from? I don’t know about you… but this is a no from me! I’m always jetting off to a new country that wasn’t on my list simply because someone at a bus station told me the food was nice 😂.

And let’s face it, travel insurance is the must-have travel accessory of the season. With everything we know about traveling, delays, and global pandemics, at this point, it’s silly to travel without proper insurance.

As someone who’s been traveling full-time for the last 10 years, here’s my guide to help you find travel insurance as a digital nomad

How to Find Travel Insurance as a Digital Nomad

I know you’re busy, which is why you are going to love this! Signing up for the perfect digital nomad insurance is just a 2-step process. You can easily have it in the next 10 minutes!

Step 1: Visit SafetyWing.com

Why is SafetyWing my preferred traveler’s insurance?

Simply because they’ve customized their plans to fit the specific travel needs of digital nomads. I’ve used their insurance for years and I know that they have their customer’s best interests at heart. SafetyWing is focused on more than just insurance. Their goal is to create a Global Safety Net for Digital Nomads.

SafetyWing loves to travel just as much as you do. They have a team located around the world, ready to help you set up your account, file your claim, pause your policy and so much more. Whenever I’ve spoken to their team, we spend half the call talking about our favorite travel destinations.

When it comes to insurance, it’s so important to be able to talk to a real person and be treated like a real person in the process.

I also know that they simplified their claims process to make it easier for you to get the help you need, while you’re on the road. They have an easy 4-step process for submitting your claim and will have your claim processed in 45 days or less.

Now that you’re at SafetyWing.com, let’s get you signed up for your policy.

Step 2: Sign up for Digital Nomad Insurance

Follow the easy steps at SafetyWing to get signed up for digital nomad insurance

The monthly payments can become a part of your overall travel costs, and you never have to think about adding a destination or renewing your policy. It’s like your Netflix subscription, except about 100x more valuable! This also means you can cancel your policy at any time, without having to contact SafetyWing.

With other insurance, if you pay upfront for the length of your trip, it’s complicated to cancel early and you might not get a full refund of the insurance you haven’t used yet. Plus, it means you need to pay hundreds of dollars upfront that could be going towards your first months of travel!

You can also purchase a policy after you’ve already left home. Making it easier than ever to make sure you’re always covered.

Do I even need Travel Insurance as a Digital Nomad?

For about 5 years I traveled without travel insurance. I always thought it was something that I didn’t need because I would just be careful. Or because I wanted to spend my money on something else. But I ended up paying way more for accidents and cancellations that would have otherwise been covered.

I’ve missed connections because of flight delays, had my bags stolen, and gotten hit by a car (yup this really happened!). All of these things I ended up paying out of pocket for… when travel insurance would have helped and reimbursed me. It also means for years when I felt sick or had an issue, I ignored it because I didn’t want to pay the out-of-pocket costs.

If you’re going to be traveling full-time (or even just for a couple of weeks or months), I know that having travel insurance will give you so much peace of mind.

Now that I always travel with digital nomad insurance, I never have to think about the cost of delays, illness abroad, damaged items, or trip interruption. I’ve even made claims for small things. When I had to rebook a hotel because of a trip delay SafetyWing was able to refund me the full amount of the stay.

It’s so nice to know that I’m covered!

How can I become a Digital Nomad?

Maybe you landed on this post because you wanted to learn more about becoming a digital nomad. Well, you’re definitely in the right place! A digital nomad (by my definition) is someone who is traveling full-time at a slow pace, allowing them to work while they travel.

While a backpacker might spend 2-3 nights in a place, a digital nomad might spend 1-2 months there. It gives us the chance to truly explore a destination while having plenty of time to get our work done. What I love about being a digital nomad is that I’m able to travel full-time without the burnout that I used to face with backpacking. And because you’re working on the road, you have so much more money to spend on the epic adventures you’ll have!
