How to Work Remotely and Travel the World in 2025
Remote work is still on the rise! This means there’s a good chance your current position could still allow you to go remote for at least part of the year.
Take your current position remote
During my travels, I’ve met people who continue to work their remote jobs on the road – but I’ve also met people who can work remotely for part of the month or year and use that time to travel. I made some amazing friends in Borneo who were traveling full-time with remote jobs back in America.
However, if you’re in a field where remote work isn’t possible – or your boss won’t let you go remote, then you might need to take a break or try something new to travel! Let me start by saying that I value my lifestyle more than my work. I’m not (nor have I ever been) trying to climb a corporate ladder get a promotion or work a ‘traditional’ job in any sense. I am more than happy to do any job that allows me to continue to live my lifestyle (within reason, of course)
Throughout my life as a digital nomad, I’ve worn many hats. I’ve been a ghostwriter on UpWork, a virtual assistant for a variety of clients, a Pinterest marketer, and a blog writer. But I’ve also volunteered at hostels, led pub crawls, and offered social media management in exchange for travel perks.
I’m telling you all of this to remind you that sometimes you just need to get creative! There are so many opportunities to work and travel out there. Let’s dive into a few entry-level jobs that you can do that will allow you to travel next year.
Teach English Remotely or Abroad
Over the years I’ve met so many amazing people who’ve been able to keep traveling the world because of the opportunity to teach English from anywhere. “Teaching English as a Foreign Language” or “TEFL” is one of the fastest ways that you can work abroad or remotely.

It’s easier than ever to get “TEFL” certified and this is the best way to become a global citizen. What I love about this remote work option is that you get to connect directly with local people. Whether you’re working from that country or working remotely as an English teacher, you’re interacting with people every day.

Work as a Virtual Assistant
Working as a virtual assistant is near and dear to my heart because that’s the way I started working remotely. If you haven’t heard this story already… I was living in Bali, volunteering at a retreat center and one of the women working there took me under her wing to help me move away from volunteer positions and into roles that paid.
It was a moment that changed my life forever.

Start growing your portfolio. The best way to do this is with your account – or volunteer to manage accounts while you travel. I’ve done this in the past! But you need to make sure that the volunteer position matches the amount of work you’re going to be doing. For example, talk to a hostel or guest house about managing their social media in exchange for free accommodation.
Then, while you’re living costs are very low, work on building your portfolio and landing paying clients!
Work Away or Volunteer
While I mainly wanted to share ways that you can make money while traveling, volunteering is another way that you can travel more in 2025. And volunteering can help you save a lot of money. Before I started working remotely, I relied on volunteer positions to help me save money on travel.
Most of the time, it’s possible to find a position that will offer you free accommodation and often some meals and activities – in exchange for a few hours of work a week. I’ve cleaned hostel dorms, led bar crawls and snorkeling trips, and even worked at an animal shelter in exchange for accommodation.
The best volunteer position I ever had was working at a retreat center in Bali as their community manager. I got to live in a beautiful villa and eat fresh home-cooked meals every day and my role was to make sure the guests were having the time of their lives. If someone wanted to take surf lessons, I joined them. When the group wanted sunset cocktails, I led the way.
And in between resorts, we lived in a ‘staff’ villa. So while the resorts were intense, in the in-between periods I could build my portfolio and explore Bali.
